Direct Answer: At our Huntington Beach office, the first orthodontic consultation is free, including the exam and the records taken that day. Policies vary by practice, so confirm what is included before you book.

Most people have the same question before they book, and it is not about braces. They want to know what walking through the door is going to cost them.

I see it in our messages all the time. One person asked for a Saturday appointment and added that they wanted the out-of-pocket cost of the consultation settled before booking. Another simply asked whether we offer free consultations to get an estimate.

That is a fair thing to want to know, and nobody should feel awkward asking. This article is strictly about the money side: what the first visit costs, whether scans and X-rays are bundled in, how insurance handles a visit where no treatment starts, and what happens if you say no afterward. If you want the step-by-step of the appointment itself, what to expect at a first orthodontic appointment covers that separately.

What the Consultation Itself Costs

At our office on Beach Boulevard, the first consultation is free. That includes the exam and the records we take that day, and you leave knowing what is going on in your mouth whether or not you ever start treatment with us.

But I want to be straight with you: that is our policy, not a rule every office follows. Consultation policies across Orange County vary more than people expect. Some practices charge an exam fee. Some offer a free visit but bill separately for imaging. Some waive the fee only if you start treatment.

So when you call anywhere, ask it plainly:

  • Is the exam itself free, or is there a fee?
  • Are X-rays and scans part of the visit, or billed on their own?
  • Do I get a written treatment plan with a price, or just a verbal estimate?
  • If I decide not to move forward, do I owe anything?

An office that answers those four questions clearly on the phone is usually an office that will answer the harder questions later. One that gets vague about a $0 to $250-ish exam fee is telling you something too.

What You Should Actually Get for a Free Visit

Free is only a good deal if the visit is thorough. A five minute look in your mouth and a handshake is not a consultation, and it will not give you a number you can plan around.

Here is what a real first visit involves at our practice:

  • A digital scan instead of the old putty impression tray. Patients bring this up on their own in reviews, usually as relief rather than as a feature. One put it simply: they used a machine that mapped out the mouth, no weird molding chemicals.
  • CBCT imaging when it is warranted, not automatically. Imaging should answer a question, not pad a file.
  • Time with Dr. Jeremy and Dr. Melissa going over what they see. Both of them see patients themselves rather than handing the consultation off.
  • A written plan with a real figure, so you are not carrying a number around in your head.

That last piece matters most. A verbal "somewhere around five grand" is not something a family in Wintersburg or Talbert Village can budget against. A written plan is.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book Anywhere

I would ask every one of these on the phone, at any office you call. The answers tell you a lot about how the rest of the relationship will go.

Ask ThisWhy It MattersA Clear Answer Sounds Like
Is the consultation free?Sets the cost of simply getting information"Yes, no charge, nothing due at checkout"
Are X-rays and scans included? This is where surprise charges usually hide"Included, nothing billed separately"
Will you bill my insurance for this visit?A diagnostic visit can quietly use plan benefits"We can run a benefit check first and tell you"
Do I get a written treatment plan?Turns a vague range into a real number"You leave with it in writing that day"
What if I decide not to start?Tells you whether you are being sold or informed"Nothing owed, the records are yours"

Insurance: The Three Plan Terms That Decide What You Owe

Roughly one in ten people who call us lead with insurance before anything else. The wording is almost always the same: they just want to know if we take their plan before they come in.

It is a reasonable filter, but the plan name matters less than three specific terms buried inside it. Locally, Delta Dental PPO and Cigna PPO come up the most.

  • Lifetime orthodontic maximum. Orthodontic benefits are usually a one-time pot of money, not an annual one. Once it is used, it does not refill.
  • Age limits on dependent coverage. Plenty of plans cut off orthodontic coverage at 19 or at the end of a child's eligibility. Adults are frequently not covered at all.
  • Waiting periods. Some plans will not pay for orthodontics until you have been enrolled for 6 to 12 months.

A front desk can usually run a benefit check before your visit so nobody is guessing in the chair. If you are covered by Denti-Cal or Medi-Cal, ask directly whether a given office participates, because orthodontic participation varies a lot across Orange County.

If you are buying your own dental coverage, there are several carrier options through the state marketplace, and Covered California reported 2026 dental rates holding close to flat. Worth a look before you assume you have nothing. For more on how coverage applies to a full case, does insurance cover braces goes deeper.

The Three Plan Terms That Decide Your Out-of-Pocket Cost

Before you call any office, pull up your plan and find these three numbers. They decide more about your cost than the practice you choose.

Why No One Can Quote Braces or Invisalign Over the Phone

People call asking what braces cost, and I understand why the deflection is frustrating. Search results for braces and Invisalign around here are full of that question, and most pages dance around it.

So here is the honest version. Three things drive the number:

  • How far the teeth have to move. Mild crowding on four lower front teeth and a full bite correction are different problems.
  • How long the case runs. A case measured in months and a case measured in two years are priced in completely different ways.
  • Which approach fits. Metal braces, champagne-colored Iconix brackets, Invisalign clear aligners, and focused touch-up work on one or two teeth all carry different costs.

That last option matters more than people realize. We had an adult write in describing mild to moderate crowding on the lower front teeth and asking specifically about limited treatment rather than a full case. That is a real path, and it is scoped and priced nothing like a two-year case.

An exam plus records is what turns a vague range into a figure a family can plan around. If you want the underlying logic, why orthodontic treatment costs what it does and what drives Invisalign pricing both break it down.

Bringing a Second Opinion Is Normal

A lot of people feel strange about shopping around. They shouldn't. One parent wrote to us about a twelve-year-old whose braces had come off the year before, said they already had two quotes, were looking for a third, and offered to send over an existing panoramic X-ray for review.

That is exactly the right instinct. Bringing prior records saves time and sometimes saves imaging. Asking what a visit costs is not rude. And comparing plans is how you figure out whether two offices are even describing the same problem.

Second opinions are genuinely welcome here, including the ones that end with less treatment recommended than the last office suggested. If you want a list to bring with you, questions to ask at an orthodontic consultation is a good starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Consultation Costs

Is the consultation really free, or do the X-rays get billed separately?

At our office the exam and the records we take that day are part of the free visit. Not every practice bundles it that way, which is why I tell people to ask about imaging specifically, not just the exam.

Will my insurance be billed for a consultation where no treatment starts?

Ask before you come in. Some diagnostic codes can draw against your benefits even when nothing gets started, and you want that sorted out beforehand rather than discovering it on a statement later.

If I say no after the consultation, do I owe anything?

Not here. You leave with the information and the plan, and you are free to take it to another office or sit on it for a year.

Can I bring X-rays or records from another orthodontist?

Yes, and it is more common than you'd think. Recent records can reduce what needs to be retaken. Just send them ahead of the visit so the doctors have time to look them over.

Do you accept Denti-Cal?

Orthodontic participation in Denti-Cal and Medi-Cal varies widely from office to office across Orange County, so call and ask directly rather than assuming either way. It is a quick question for a front desk to answer.

Am I too old for this to be worth paying for?

No. We treat patients well into their 70s. One patient who finished treatment at 76 left a review recommending it to anyone at any age thinking about improving their smile.
